A baby shower gift lands best when it suits the family you are buying for. Some parents have a registry and a plan. Some would rather have dinner arrive than another parcel. Below are ten ideas for Australian gift-givers, each with a current price and a note on who it suits.
This guide is written by Warren Hill, a family business based in Currumbin, Queensland. We make the play mats in items 1 and 2 and we link to our own collection pages. Everything else is an editorial suggestion with no commercial relationship. This is researched from public product listings, not a hands-on comparison test. Prices are in AUD, exclude delivery, and were read from each brand's own website on 18 September 2026. Confirm price and availability before ordering.
Something for the floor
1. A quilted linen play mat, $164.95
Some of the most useful baby gifts are the ones a family keeps reaching for as their little one grows.
Our quilted linen play mats are made for just that. Spread one out for supervised tummy time, move it into the lounge for an afternoon together, or pack it for a visit to the grandparents. At 115cm round, it’s easy to move from room to room and folds into a matching linen bag to take along.
As the baby years pass, it can become a cosy blanket for a toddler, a spot for storytime or the floor of a very important cubby house. It’s a piece to keep using, rather than something to put away once they start walking.
We choose premium French flax linen for its beautiful texture, strength and the way it softens with use. With polyester padding quilted between the linen layers, our mats are an investment in quality materials, made to be enjoyed for years. And when everyday life leaves its mark, the whole mat goes in the washing machine at 40°C, then on the line to dry.
Choose a colour they’ll love having in their home. It’s a thoughtful gift from you, or something special to give together with a few friends.
For babies, use only for awake, supervised play. Play mats aren’t a sleep surface or bedding for infant sleep.
2. A quilted cotton play mat, $109.95
Warren Hill quilted cotton play mat. The same 115cm round shape and the same whole-mat washability, with a sandwashed cotton outer instead of linen. The finish is smoother and more uniform in colour.
Who it suits: the same use, at a lower price, for a giver buying alone rather than as part of a group.
Something useful under $60
3. Organic cotton muslin wraps, $39.95 to $49.95
Nature Baby Muslin Wrap in Natural, $49.95. A single 120 x 120cm wrap in 100% organic cotton woven muslin, with GOTS certification stated on the product page.
For two wraps in one gift, Purebaby's 2 Pack Wattle Bee Muslin Wrap is $39.95 and the Little Bunny 2 Pack is $49.95. Both are regular prices for different print ranges, not a sale.
Who it suits: anyone. Wraps stay useful well past the swaddling months.
Before you buy: check the registry first. Wraps are one of the more commonly given gifts, so this is a better present when you know it fills an actual gap. Follow current safe-wrapping guidance and the product instructions.
4. A swaddle bag, $42.95
ergoPouch Cocoon Swaddle Bag, 0.2 TOG, $42.95. A zip-up bag rather than a flat wrap, sized by age.
Who it suits: a giver who wants something in the same price band as a wrap set but less likely to arrive twice. Check the size against the baby's due date and the season.
5. An everyday outfit with a print worth looking at, $42.95
Wilson + Frenchy Mini Jungle Organic Boyleg Zipsuit, $42.95. The brand lists the fabric as 95% GOTS-certified organic cotton with 5% elastane, and describes it as a short-sleeved, short-leg style for warmer days.
Before you buy: size up only if the larger size lands in warm weather. Ask for a gift receipt.
Something they will keep
6. A linen-covered baby journal, $59.95
Write To Me, Baby. Birth To Five Years, $59.95. Designed in Melbourne, with a linen hardcover, guided pages and FSC-certified paper. Sold as four separate colourways rather than one product with a selector.
Who it suits: someone who enjoys photographs and handwritten notes. Present it as somewhere to keep a few favourite memories, not a milestone obligation.
7. A board book you have actually read with a child
Choose one you have enjoyed sharing, or ask a local bookseller. A short handwritten note inside about why you chose it turns a small gift into a personal one.
Before you buy: check the family's preferred language and whether they already own it.
Something for the parents
8. A feeding pillow, $74.99 to $89.99
Milkbar Nursing Pillow, $74.99, an Australian brand with a zip-off washable cover, or the My Brest Friend Original, $89.99 from Playette, which describes itself as the Australian home of the brand.
Who it suits: a practical gift for the person doing the feeding, whichever way the baby is fed.
9. A baby and child first aid course, $150 to $210
Tiny Hearts public in-person course, $210 per ticket, running in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra and Geelong. The online course is $150. A private at-home session is $160 per person with a ten-person minimum.
Before you buy: ask first. Confirm whether they would prefer online or in person, whether the ticket covers one person or two, and whether the dates work. Individual in-person sessions sell out by date and city.
10. Food, or the freedom to choose
A meal delivery voucher or an agreed drop-off of home-cooked food is often the most welcome gift for a second or third baby, when the cupboards are already full of equipment. Set a budget you are comfortable with, then check how many meals it actually buys before you describe it as anything.
A gift card is not a lazy present at a baby shower. Parents often have strong colour and brand preferences they have never said out loud, and a card lets them finish a set rather than start a fourth one. Add a note saying what you hoped it might go towards.
How to choose between them
Will it still be in use at six months? Newborn clothing is outgrown fast. A mat, a liner, a feeding pillow or a journal has a longer life.
Is it on the registry, or have you asked? The single best way to avoid duplicating a gift is to check. Wraps, bibs, hooded towels and newborn-size clothing are the items most worth checking on.
Can it be cleaned the way this household will actually clean it? Some families will wipe a mat down in ten seconds. Some would rather put the whole thing in the machine on Sunday. Both are valid, and they lead to different products.
Is it for the baby or for the parents? At a first baby shower, gifts for the baby land well. Later on, food, time and help usually land better.
Questions people ask
How much should I spend on a baby shower gift?
Whatever you are comfortable with. There is no required amount. This guide has ideas from $39.95 to $210, and several where you set the figure yourself. If a few people want to give one larger present together, pooling is straightforward and lets you reach something the parents would not buy themselves.
Is a play mat a good baby shower gift?
It can be, particularly if the parents want one and you know their style. Compare the footprint, the fabric and the cleaning instructions before choosing. A quilted fabric mat suits a household that wants a washable textile surface for supervised floor play; a foam mat suits one that wants a thicker, wipe-clean surface. Our Australian play mat comparison sets the options side by side.
What if I do not know their nursery colours?
Ask, check the registry, or give a gift card. A neutral colour is still a preference and will go perfectly in any home.
What makes a gift environmentally considered?
Look for a product that will be used for years, clear information about what it is made from, and specific evidence behind any claim. Organic fibre certification, certified paper and a tree-planting contribution each tell you something different, and none of them describes a whole product's footprint. A natural-looking colour palette tells you nothing at all about how something was made.
What should I check before ordering?
Delivery estimate, total cost including postage, gift wrapping options and the returns policy. For clothing, size and season. For anything that goes on the floor, the dimensions against the room.
